Celebrating the end of the Fallow season

The start of May brings to a close our busiest period of the year, with the season for harvesting Fallow ending on the 31st April, recommencing on 1st August. It’s been a fantastic first full season for Sustainable Meat Eater, with the launch of our online shop, a busy programme of events, markets and fairs, and the forming of new partnerships with local pubs, butchers, farm shops and restaurants.

However, we won’t be resting on our laurels here at SME HQ, as we continue to harvest Roe and Muntjac in line with the deer seasons. Female Roe deer have a different breeding cycle to fallow and other deer species, meaning the males are in season from 1st April until 31st October. Muntjac meanwhile have no closed season as they are such prolific breeders and are the cause of a lot of damage to woodland and crops.

Most importantly, of course, we will continue to bring you delicious, sustainable, wild meat over the coming months, because, despite what you might think, venison really is a meat for all year round.
